Daughter of The King - Kim Atkins

1 John 3:1

"See what great love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God! And that is what we are! The reason the world does not know us is that it did not know him."

It was such a pleasure chatting to Kim Atkins! It took one phone call to seal a friendship with Kim and realize how passionate she is about the work she is doing and how deeply she loves our Lord! Her words express her love for The Lord and after one phone call I knew that she is going to do amazing things with the work she is doing!

1. Please tell us more about yourself?

Kim married to Michael since 1993. I am 55.

I have worked in design for most of my career. Textiles, knit-ware (jerseys) and then jewellery design as well as restoring ceramics, which ultimately God told me to put down.

I have to children, Noah, 22, doing honours in Operations research at Stellenbosch University and Sophie, 3rd year Medicine at Wits.

2. As a Christian & Child of God, what inspires you the most?

I have passion to see people whole! Knowing who they are and walking in fullness.I would say justice is a primary driving motivator.

Micah 6:8 :

"He has shown you, O mortal, what is good. And what does the Lord require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God."

Proverbs 31:8-9:

"Speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves, for the rights of all who are destitute. Speak up and judge fairly; defend the rights of the poor and needy."

Another Scripture that has shaped my walk: - At first I did not know hat the Lord was saying to me, what I came to realize was the inequality and lack of opportunity within the jewellery industry, and that He wanted me to address that. He told me to disrupt it and He said this before I knew that it was a proper term.

Nehemiah 3:28-32:

"Above the Horse Gate the priests made repairs, each one in front of his own house. After them Zadok the son of Immer carried out repairs in front of his house. After him Shemaiah the son of Shecaniah, keeper of the East Gate, repaired the wall. After him Hananiah the son of Shelemiah, and Hanun the sixth son of Zalaph, repaired another section. After him Meshullam the son of Berechiah carried out repairs in front of his own quarters. After him Malchijah, one of the goldsmiths, carried out repairs as far as the house of the temple servants and of the merchants, in front of the ]Inspection Gate and as far as the upper room of the corner. 32 Between the upper room of the corner and the Sheep Gate the goldsmiths and merchants carried out repairs."

With this one he was telling me to address the historical and intrenched inequality within the industry. It works out the jewellery graduates that do not have access to generational wealth cannot get started in their own right and are thus only able get jobs that are not particularly well paid. Then they are stuck in a relatively low paying job for the foreseeable future.

To this end I have started a Non-Profit company and called it the LEGACY JEWELLERY PROJECT, to build a shared facility that allows young jewellers to build their own brands. Currently, this project is in the preliminary stages.

3. When was the turning point for you, the day you decided to give your life to the Lord and accept Jesus Christ as your saviour?

I recommitted my life to the Lord in my mid-20’s. I had been a believer as a child and teen, but due to rejection from being adopted I came to a halt and I back-slid. Only when I came face to face with the Living God and recognized that Jesus opened the way to the Father, and that I was adopted into His family by the Spirit of adoption by which we cry out Abba Father!

4. Please tell us more about your business / project & how you came across this idea?

I strongly feel that God has led and guided me every step of the way; its been His idea not mine! Starting with telling me I needed to start beading. To take a physical thing and make a prophetic declaration, add value to the work, and then rebuild the walls.

5. What goals have you set for your idea / business / project?

To build an incubator.

6. What has been your biggest challenge thus far?

Learning to hold things close to me heart, because even fellow Christians kept on telling me that what I believed God was saying was not possible. Just because things have always been a particular way, it does not mean that it is the right way!

7. What is your favourite / most inspirational bible verse that you live by?

"Be strong and confident and courageous, for you will give this people as an inheritance the land which I swore to their fathers (ancestors) to give them. Only be strong and very courageous; be careful to do [everything] in accordance with the entire law which Moses My servant commanded you; do not turn from it to the right or to the left, so that you may prosper and be successful wherever you go. This Book of the Law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall read [and meditate on] it day and night, so that you may be careful to do [everything] in accordance with all that is written in it; for then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will be [d]successful. Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous! Do not be terrified or dismayed (intimidated), for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.”

8. What does the phrase Daughter of the King mean to you?

He took someone who did not know who she was where she was going and transformed her, beatified her, made her without spot or blemish and set her feet, with purpose, on a wild journey, beyond imagination. All the while calling her His daughter. A Daughter of the King

9. What advice do you have for other Christian Women?

Seek Him, learn to hear His voice, dream with Him and be brave enough to live courageously.
